I’m flying through Schiphol Airport next week and have a four-hour layover. I’d like to have a decent meal and maybe buy something, but I’ve heard that airport prices are out of this world. How much more expensive are they compared to regular cafés in the city?
I’m also wondering if there are any affordable dining options, or if everything is in the premium segment where a simple sandwich costs as much as a restaurant meal. I’ve heard that Schiphol is considered one of the best airports in Europe, but that usually means the prices reflect that. I want to know how much I should realistically budget for a four-hour stay so that I don’t have any unpleasant surprises when I count my change before boarding.
I was stuck at Schiphol Airport once for four hours due to a flight delay. I didn’t just sit there and wait. I decided to walk around and see what was interesting. A coffee at a café near the gate was more expensive than in the city but not a disaster. A salmon sandwich cost about €10. Prices at Amsterdam Airport (AMS) differ from those at regular establishments. It’s worth checking out a guide to the airport. Overall, I spent about €35 in four hours: two coffees, a sandwich, a beer before boarding, and a small souvenir from the duty-free. Also, there’s a Starbucks and a few fast-food restaurants. I think you’ll find something to do so you don’t spend all your money. How much do you estimate you’ll spend at the airport?
