Margaret “Louise” Shaw, age 79, passed away from a broken heart on July 18th, 2020. She was born on October 14, 1940 in Pahokee, Florida to Bud and Sarah Wallace, she lived in Fort Gaines, Georgia for the majority of her childhood. There she met her future husband, Jimmy. She eloped and married her longtime friend and love, Jimmy Turner Shaw, in 1957 at the tender age of 17. Margaret was an excellent singer who enjoyed blues, bluegrass, and gospel music. After Moving to Overtown in Miami, Florida in the late 1950s, she and her husband became active members of Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist church before and after it was relocated to its present location at 1745 NW 79th St, Miami, Florida. Out of all of Margaret’s jobs, she enjoyed working with her husband the most at “Maggies” which was the bakery that they both owned. Margaret overcame two types of cancer and was a strong woman. Margaret was a God-fearing woman with an infectious laugh who, like her husband, believed in honesty and integrity. She was a master cook in the kitchen who loved entertaining and feeding people. She took extreme pride in all of our family. Margaret and Jimmy Shaw grew up with humble means in a Georgia town with no streetlights or indoor plumbing. They were teenagers when they got married — without telling their parents, walking back from the ceremony to their respective family homes. They remained married for nearly 63 years, long enough to see their grandchildren go to college.
“It’s a beautiful love story,” their granddaughter Tiffany McGee said.
But it was one with an ending unique to 2020. They died of the coronavirus within 24 hours of each other, in separate hospital rooms, without relatives or friends around them. Ms. Shaw, who did not own a cellphone, did not even know how her husband was faring while they were hospitalized in North Shore Medical Center in Miami.
Mr. Shaw died on July 17 at 80. Ms. Shaw died a day later at 79.
In addition to Ms. McGee, they are survived by three children, seven more grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, as well as a sister on Ms. Shaw’s side and two sisters on Mr. Shaw’s.
